tennessee williams

One of my very favorite Christmas gifts has been this book given to me by my dear sweet friend, Rachel.

I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed reading through these mostly short stories….being an avid reader, i must confess that I have been lacking when it comes to southern writers. Especially those of Wolfe, Faulkner, Welty, and Williams.

I highly encourage you to read Tennessee Williams.

I love finding new reading loves.

I also loved how Rachel knew that I would love this. That’s one of the reasons we are so close—she gets me. And I get her. We’re on the same page and it’s so refreshing to feel that you’ve been “gotten”. Doesn’t it?

Like most of the literary greats, Tennessee lived a pretty fascinating life. Read about his life here.

Christmas 2011

This Christmas was one of the best ones I can remember. Certainly the best one in the past decade.

It was so much fun this year mainly because of this little guy….

As usual, when we woke up we all gathered in the living room and before we open any stockings or gifts we have a tradition……to find the green pickle hidden in the Christmas tree!

And I always win (I really do). It’s really disadvantageous to my brothers who are both color blind….but oh well. The winner always gets a Mrs. Prindable's apple.

This is the same stocking I’ve had for 29 years.

This is our original Santa plate we’ve had since Caroline’s birth in 1989

I hadn’t asked for anything this year besides money to go to a holiday retreat….and lo and behold I racked up this Christmas! I was absolutely shocked to find that my sweet brother bought me a new computer! I had been using one that my friend was about to throw out in the trash but graciously let me use for school and it served all my needs—internet and word (for school and writing). It never occurred to me that it was slow. But my brother obviously caught notice! Thank you, Brian! I screamed like a little girl upon opening it.

My other brother, Clint, bought me this gorgeous set of books…..after seeing the movie (and thinking it was kick-ass) I can’t wait to read the rest.

My little sister got me this gorgeous ring!

And these super hip Toms. I guess she’s trying to keep me in style.

One of the more funny gifts this year was this gigantic boom box my mom bought for my dad. I think she intended it to go in his medical clinic…..it could not be more ghettolicious! Way to go mom!

It was so fun watching Irwin open his gifts…he loves his new work bench!

Fun with the family…..

After last years absence, I am happy to report that the entire Maranto family was here for this Christmas! All 18 of us enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner. My mom works like a slave every Christmas and I don’t think we could ever give her enough credit. THANK YOU MOM!!!!

Our kitchen and dining room were set beautifully….due to mom, of course…

And our deserts were super yummy. Especially the 3 day old coconut cake..and my second batch of spicy pecans turned out really tasty

and no Christmas would be complete without Mrs. Maranto's puppy chow mix...

I know I’ve mentioned this before but the Maranto family and my family have been doing Christmas and Easter together since 1987. The only year we were not all together was last year and that was due to Claire having her baby boy—who is now  one year old! It was so awesome to have them all here this year. The babies played so well together. I’ve loved growing up and spending our holidays with this family. They mean so much to us.

Claire (Maranto), Mark, and Nathan Kolvites joined us this year from Jefferson, NC

Claires’ little boy, Nathan. Such a cutie!

After dinner we all enjoyed a family game of Catch Phrase. We played 3 rounds. In the end the guys won…but us girls put up a good fight. We had a good many laughs….

The “magic” of Christmas that we often feel as children and lose as adults was certainly felt this year. I am happy to report we had zero Christmas melt-downs. We all got along famously. We were all grateful for our gifts (especially me!). and in my house, we are always reminded of the real reason for celebrating this holiday---the birth of Jesus Christ.

As I sit here propped up on the couch watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas! with my nephew, I am reminded that there are those out there who are less fortunate; there are those who are sick, hungry, tired, lonely, broken, angry, cold….the list goes on and on. I don’t know why God has blessed me and my family so much. But I know that it’s my responsibility to shed love and light to all around me….to spread the message of Christmas to everyone I meet. I don’t have to do this with words, but by my actions. May we all remember to take care of our own and also remember that everyone is our own.

From our house to yours,

Merry Merry Christmas!

Christmas Blessings!

For to us a child is born
To us a son is given,
And the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Christmas Blessings to you and yours!

Much Love,
Jennifer

i’ll have to tell you those theories sometime…..they are fairly amusing.

occupational therapy: the what and the where

I get asked all the time, “what exactly is an occupational therapist?” and “what do occupational therapists do?”

My answer to you is that I really don’t know. I’ve only completed 2 semesters (out of 9) of OT school and I’m just now sort of kind of forming my own opinion and understanding of our profession and what it is that “we” do.

So, please remember that as a first year OT student, my answer will look much different than one written by a third year student or by an actual practicing OT.

My understanding of what we do is this…

We help people achieve whatever it is they want to achieve but can not do so independently because of a disability (both physical and cognitive), illness, difficulty, impairment, etc.

We exist so that YOU may live life more fully. We work to help you do whatever it is that you want to do but can no longer do it by yourself.

For example, if you were in a car accident and sustained a traumatic brain injury and your first and true love was gardening but now your brain will no longer allow you to put together the systematic sequential steps it takes in order to garden, we would come in and help you. We might help you with sequencing (cognitive) and we might help you with strengthening (to hold your garden utensils or whatever) and we might help you modify or adapt anything you can no longer do by yourself. Essentially, we will do whatever it takes so that you can participate in an activity that is vital to you or meaningful to you.

It could be anything... cooking, tennis, education, work, horse-back riding, yoga, music…whatever it is that you need to do and that you enjoy doing…we step in to be sort of a gentle guiding hand to see that you are able to do those things again.

We work in all kinds of settings... hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, private practice facilities, schools, psych units, addiction centers, hospice homes, you name it—we’re there.

As you can probably already tell, there really is no limit as to what we do or where we do it.

We do it all.

We are, by nature, very holistic. We address the whole person…not just the physical aspect (which is more of what Physical Therapists do). We address your emotional state, your cognitive state, your spiritual state, and your physical state.

So, that’s it in a nut-shell.

Why am I, personally, choosing Occupational Therapy as a profession?

Because it just fits with what I feel my purpose here on earth is—to help others.

To help others live life to the fullest; To help others find purpose and passion either for the first time, or again; To make sure people know that no matter what they go through, they are still vital and important; They are still worthy and they are still capable of finding “it” again…whatever that “it” is for them. That spark, that little flicker of joy, the missing puzzle piece..... the magic of life.

In what setting do I want to work?

I think that I would most like to work in the mental health field.
I am also highly interested in getting an advanced degree/certificate in emotion-regulation and in working as a consultant. Both of those sound wonderful to me. But who knows. At the end of my 3 years, all of this may change. I may want to work in an elementary school. Ha! (probably not, although I do love children).

And of course, my long term goal is to have my PhD in Clinical psychology by the time I’m 40. Which means that I’ll work in the field for several years before going back to school.

I hope that this has been helpful.

If not, please ask away! I’ll do my best to answer with what limited knowledge and understanding I have.

All I know is that I chose the best field for me and I am VERY excited about my future career.

What an honor it is to do something that I love and feel passionate about. I wish more people would choose their careers based on passion and purpose rather than money.

The majority of people I know hate their jobs. This actually may have to do more with the person than their chosen profession…but it’s just an observation.

Do you like your job? Why? Why not?

dear santa

Dear Santa,

I’ve been mostly good this year.

When I say mostly, I mean….i put my foot in my mouth a few times, said a few things I shouldn’t have, reacted poorly a few many times, ate entirely too much sugar, taunted a few too many men, didn’t recycle near enough, gained a few too many pounds, sent a couple of texts I shouldn’t have, had a few lapses in judgment, etc, etc, etc….

However, I think on the whole I did a lot better than previous years. I completed two semesters of grad school, I told people the truth even when it wasn’t pretty, I formed new boundaries and stuck to them, I didn’t react every single time I had the opportunity to, I didn’t feel the need to defend myself or explain myself. I came into a new sort of confidence that I didn’t think was possible. I experienced contentment and fulfillment in a whole new way. I discovered more things that I do not want to emulate in my life. And a bunch of new things I do.

There are really not too many things I can think of that I want, that I don’t already have.

I mean, sure….a hot (and good) man, new car, and a trip to Portugal would be nice….

But I’ll settle for a little time off school, laughs around the fire, meal-times with friends, and being home on Christmas Day.

But if you could, would you please end all this ridiculous nonsense that’s going on in our country? Would you please make people see that they aren’t so different from one another? Would you please remind everyone that really nothing is that big of a deal? And that the way people treat their family is telling of who they really are. Would you please help the 100% who are divided into 90/10? Will you make sure that the people who really are in need will be helped? Will you put a big hunk of joy and peace in our stockings this year? And more than anything, will you please send me an everlasting gobstopper? I’ve wanted one for so long now.

That’s all.

Yours truly,
Jennifer Nanney
