Christmas 2011

This Christmas was one of the best ones I can remember. Certainly the best one in the past decade.

It was so much fun this year mainly because of this little guy….

As usual, when we woke up we all gathered in the living room and before we open any stockings or gifts we have a tradition……to find the green pickle hidden in the Christmas tree!

And I always win (I really do). It’s really disadvantageous to my brothers who are both color blind….but oh well. The winner always gets a Mrs. Prindable's apple.

This is the same stocking I’ve had for 29 years.

This is our original Santa plate we’ve had since Caroline’s birth in 1989

I hadn’t asked for anything this year besides money to go to a holiday retreat….and lo and behold I racked up this Christmas! I was absolutely shocked to find that my sweet brother bought me a new computer! I had been using one that my friend was about to throw out in the trash but graciously let me use for school and it served all my needs—internet and word (for school and writing). It never occurred to me that it was slow. But my brother obviously caught notice! Thank you, Brian! I screamed like a little girl upon opening it.

My other brother, Clint, bought me this gorgeous set of books…..after seeing the movie (and thinking it was kick-ass) I can’t wait to read the rest.

My little sister got me this gorgeous ring!

And these super hip Toms. I guess she’s trying to keep me in style.

One of the more funny gifts this year was this gigantic boom box my mom bought for my dad. I think she intended it to go in his medical clinic…..it could not be more ghettolicious! Way to go mom!

It was so fun watching Irwin open his gifts…he loves his new work bench!

Fun with the family…..

After last years absence, I am happy to report that the entire Maranto family was here for this Christmas! All 18 of us enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner. My mom works like a slave every Christmas and I don’t think we could ever give her enough credit. THANK YOU MOM!!!!

Our kitchen and dining room were set beautifully….due to mom, of course…

And our deserts were super yummy. Especially the 3 day old coconut cake..and my second batch of spicy pecans turned out really tasty

and no Christmas would be complete without Mrs. Maranto's puppy chow mix...

I know I’ve mentioned this before but the Maranto family and my family have been doing Christmas and Easter together since 1987. The only year we were not all together was last year and that was due to Claire having her baby boy—who is now  one year old! It was so awesome to have them all here this year. The babies played so well together. I’ve loved growing up and spending our holidays with this family. They mean so much to us.

Claire (Maranto), Mark, and Nathan Kolvites joined us this year from Jefferson, NC

Claires’ little boy, Nathan. Such a cutie!

After dinner we all enjoyed a family game of Catch Phrase. We played 3 rounds. In the end the guys won…but us girls put up a good fight. We had a good many laughs….

The “magic” of Christmas that we often feel as children and lose as adults was certainly felt this year. I am happy to report we had zero Christmas melt-downs. We all got along famously. We were all grateful for our gifts (especially me!). and in my house, we are always reminded of the real reason for celebrating this holiday---the birth of Jesus Christ.

As I sit here propped up on the couch watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas! with my nephew, I am reminded that there are those out there who are less fortunate; there are those who are sick, hungry, tired, lonely, broken, angry, cold….the list goes on and on. I don’t know why God has blessed me and my family so much. But I know that it’s my responsibility to shed love and light to all around me….to spread the message of Christmas to everyone I meet. I don’t have to do this with words, but by my actions. May we all remember to take care of our own and also remember that everyone is our own.

From our house to yours,

Merry Merry Christmas!

Christmas Blessings!

For to us a child is born
To us a son is given,
And the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Christmas Blessings to you and yours!

Much Love,
Jennifer

dear santa

Dear Santa,

I’ve been mostly good this year.

When I say mostly, I mean….i put my foot in my mouth a few times, said a few things I shouldn’t have, reacted poorly a few many times, ate entirely too much sugar, taunted a few too many men, didn’t recycle near enough, gained a few too many pounds, sent a couple of texts I shouldn’t have, had a few lapses in judgment, etc, etc, etc….

However, I think on the whole I did a lot better than previous years. I completed two semesters of grad school, I told people the truth even when it wasn’t pretty, I formed new boundaries and stuck to them, I didn’t react every single time I had the opportunity to, I didn’t feel the need to defend myself or explain myself. I came into a new sort of confidence that I didn’t think was possible. I experienced contentment and fulfillment in a whole new way. I discovered more things that I do not want to emulate in my life. And a bunch of new things I do.

There are really not too many things I can think of that I want, that I don’t already have.

I mean, sure….a hot (and good) man, new car, and a trip to Portugal would be nice….

But I’ll settle for a little time off school, laughs around the fire, meal-times with friends, and being home on Christmas Day.

But if you could, would you please end all this ridiculous nonsense that’s going on in our country? Would you please make people see that they aren’t so different from one another? Would you please remind everyone that really nothing is that big of a deal? And that the way people treat their family is telling of who they really are. Would you please help the 100% who are divided into 90/10? Will you make sure that the people who really are in need will be helped? Will you put a big hunk of joy and peace in our stockings this year? And more than anything, will you please send me an everlasting gobstopper? I’ve wanted one for so long now.

That’s all.

Yours truly,
Jennifer Nanney

Christmas Day

This year Christmas was a little different. Not bad different. And not good different.  Just different. We didn’t do any of our annual traditions. For the past 23 years, we’ve spent Christmas day with our dear friends, the Maranto family. Claire (the eldest of the Maranto clan) welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world just a few weeks ago and so, of course, the family went to visit the new baby! I can’t wait to meet Nathan. He’s such a cutie! This year was the first year that it’s just been our family eating around the table on Christmas day. Wendy (Brian’s girlfriend) joined us and we were so thankful for her presence. Wendy is truly a blessing.
And as usual, Irwin took center stage. I just love that little boy to pieces.

we always have a real, live Christmas tree. We've never, in my 28 years, ever had a fake tree.
Our mantle with our stockings;)
Brian

Caroline in her pimp pineapple sunglasses
My mom brought these back from Hawaii. I don’t think she had any idea what they were. We all got a big laugh out of them;) The Marijuana sunglasses were a hit!

Santa brought me a beautiful ring!

And my sister gave me this cool Owl necklace
and this cool book
The most fun was watching Irwin "open" his gifts
Irwin has a beautiful mother!
We love to read to our baby

My mom was pretty excited about her Drew Brees book!
My sweet parents have been married 31 years!
My mom cooked us an amazing dinner!
but it's a tradition that i make the sweet potato casserole

we all ate at the "big" table this year
and Winn loves to eat as well

Holly (our outside dog for over 12 years)

me and my babies (Irwin and Mr. Buckley)

As you can see, I am blessed.

I hope your Christmas day was wonderful.

Merry Christmas!
